About the recorded presentation

Highlights
  • Take a deep dive into the area of mucosal drug delivery and its patient-centricity.
  • Explore how mucoadhesion affects patient adherence and compliance and drives differentiation.
  • Discover how novel and speciality ingredients like mucoadhesive polymers can be used.
  • Suitable for R&D researchers, junior and senior scientists and salespeople with technical interests.

Mucosal drug delivery involves administration to moist cavities, such as the throat, vagina, or bladder. This allows for local treatments with reduced systemic side effects. The mucosal route can avoid significant drawbacks present for the oral administration of drugs, such as hepatic first-pass metabolism, slow absorption, and drug degradation within the gastrointestinal tract, without the need for painful injectable products.

Whilst mucosal drug delivery offers exciting opportunities for novel therapies, there are several challenges present that require specialist expertise to overcome. Importantly, the palatability, irritancy, and formulation retention at the site of application need to be considered in the design of such medicines. Robust and validated in vitro and ex vivo methods are essential tools to assess the performance of mucosal drug delivery systems and to predict their in vivo behaviour. This presentation provides insight into the formulation and testing methods of vaginal and nasal spray mucosal products and aims to elucidate the main challenges related to these dosage forms.
